Wearing a Mask Is a Key Measure to Reduce Virus Transmission and Save Lives
Wearing a mask anywhere outside the home should be taken as seriously as other essential health measures, including maintaining social distancing, avoiding crowded and enclosed spaces, ensuring proper ventilation, washing hands frequently, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Wearing a mask is one of the most effective ways to prevent the transmission of viral infections. Masks help protect healthy individuals while also reducing the spread of infection from infected individuals.
For example, in areas where viruses are circulating, masks should be worn in crowded places, locations where social distancing cannot be maintained, enclosed environments, and rooms with poor ventilation. Since it is often difficult to assess the quality of ventilation—which depends on air exchange rates and the circulation of fresh outdoor air—it is recommended to wear a mask whenever you are outside your home. In fact, wearing a mask in any public place is strongly recommended.
There are various types of masks available to help protect yourself and others against COVID-19 and other respiratory infections. However, it is essential to choose a mask that meets appropriate safety standards. The different types of masks are explained below.
Types of Masks
Cloth Masks:
- Cloth masks can be made from different types of fabric and are available in various designs. To provide adequate protection, they should consist of multiple layers of tightly woven, breathable fabric, include a flexible metal nose strip, and should not allow light to pass through when held up to sunlight.
- Cloth masks are reusable and can be washed and used multiple times.
Disposable Masks:
- It is important to choose disposable masks that meet recognized safety standards. Ideally, the packaging should indicate that the mask is made of multiple layers of breathable, non-woven protective material.
- The mask should include a metal nose strip for a secure fit.
- It should not allow light to pass through when held up against a light source.
Masks That Are Not Recommended:
- Masks with exhalation valves or vents are not recommended because they allow respiratory droplets and viruses to escape during exhalation. These masks were originally designed for industrial workers to filter dust and particles during inhalation while making breathing easier during exhalation. As a result, they are ineffective in preventing the spread of COVID-19 or other respiratory viruses.
- Single-layer masks or very thin masks that allow sunlight to pass through do not provide sufficient protection against viruses.
- Masks that are too large or too small and do not fully cover the nose and mouth should not be used.
- Cloth masks should be washed regularly, and disposable masks should be replaced several times throughout the day when necessary. Dirty, wet, or damp masks should never be used and must be replaced immediately.
Important Tips for Putting On and Removing a Mask
- For added protection, wear two masks by placing a disposable mask underneath a cloth mask.
- Tie knots in the ear loops if necessary to improve the fit and ensure the mask fits snugly against the face.
- Before touching the mask, clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Inspect the mask for any tears or damage before use. Do not use a mask that has been previously worn and is damaged.
- Make sure the metal nose strip is positioned over the bridge of the nose and press it firmly to create a proper seal.
- Ensure that the inner side of the mask (usually the white side) faces your face.
- The mask should completely cover the nose, mouth, and chin. Adjust the ear loops or head straps so that the mask fits securely against the face with minimal gaps.
- When removing the mask, sanitize your hands first. Remove the mask by holding the ear loops or straps without touching the front of the mask. Sanitize your hands again immediately afterward.
- Check whether the mask has become wet or dirty, and replace it if necessary.
Do not forget that masks should be worn both indoors and outdoors whenever people are gathered together. Wearing a mask remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of viral infections and protect both yourself and those around you. Everyone is encouraged to take this responsibility seriously and remind others to do the same.
